Aloft is a striped hot-air balloon of our own, painted in gouache: a scalloped gold valance, a round cream medallion on its side, a wicker basket hung with bunting and wildflowers, two little sandbags, and a long swallowtail banner hanging below on two ropes. Your first names are painted on the banner, your initials sit in the medallion, and the balloon floats up the card with the day and the place under it. The reply card is the banner asking your guests to come up with you, the place cards are the banner with each guest’s name and a little cloud, the table numbers sit in the medallion and every sign wears the balloon; add a photograph and it sits in a scalloped gold medallion like the balloon’s own. Mint and peach as painted, or pink and cream, sky and butter, or deep rose on a night sky.
