Carousel is a merry-go-round of our own, painted in gouache: a striped canopy with a little crown, scalloped valances hung with gold bobbles, and two horses rearing towards a round medallion on its column. The card’s word is painted on the canopy’s band, your initials sit in the medallion and your names stand under the base in spaced capitals. With a photograph, the card closes in on the carousel’s middle and puts the two of you in the medallion, a horse either side. The reply card and the place cards are ride tickets, the table number sits in the medallion and every sign wears the canopy with your names on its band. Strawberry, pistachio, lilac, or at night with every bulb lit.
