Chapel is a little clapboard wedding chapel of our own, painted in gouache: a white bell tower with a bronze bell and a heart cut out under it, a gold heart on its spire, roses climbing round double doors thrown open on a plain cream inside, two topiaries and a picket fence. Your first names are set large over it, your initials lettered on the arched board above the door, and the date and the place are pinned up inside the open doors like a little notice; add a photograph and it stands in the doorway. The reply card is the bell tower with “Ring the bell” beside it, the place cards are the arched board with each guest’s name on it, the table numbers sit in the heart under the bell tower, and every sign wears the tower and the roof. Blush as painted, or the same chapel in sage, lilac or sky blue.
