Fleuriste is a little flower cart of our own, painted in gouache: a pale blue cart on two spoked wheels under a scalloped striped canopy, heaped with buckets of tulips, daisies, sweet peas and garden roses. Your first names stand large over it, your date is painted across the wide cream board on its front like a market cart’s sign, and the place sits under its wheels; add a photograph and it hangs above the canopy with the canopy’s own scalloped edge. The place cards are kraft gift tags on twine, the table numbers the cart’s board stood up as a stall sign, the reply card says “Pick your bunch” with your dinners as buckets of flowers, and every sign has the cart at its head. Butter as painted, or a blush pink, garden sage or coral canopy.
