Gateau is a tall wedding cake of our own, painted in gouache: three tiers of buttercream piped with cream swags, bows and shells, a cherry on every swag and two little flags on top. Your first names are piped round its middle tier on a smooth cream band, your initials fly on the flags, and the cake stands on its scalloped stand at the heart of the card. The reply card asks your guests to save you a slice, the place cards are slices of the cake, the table numbers stand over its top two tiers and every sign wears them; add a photograph and it is pinned to the cake in a sugar plaque ringed with piped pearls. Strawberry as painted, or the same cake iced in pistachio, lemon or chocolate.
