Lobby is a pastel grand hotel of our own, painted in gouache: shuttered windows with flower boxes, a striped awning over a brass revolving door, and your names standing along its roof in tall spaced capitals, the way a grand hotel’s name stands over the town, your initials on the sign over the door. The reply card is a brass key tag numbered with your day, the menu is room service, and the thank-you thanks your guests for staying. With a photograph, the card closes in on the hotel’s middle and puts the two of you in its great arched window. Strawberry milk, pistachio, lilac, butter, or the same hotel at night with every window lit.
