Parlour is a pastel gelato parlour of our own, painted in gouache: a big sign board over a striped awning, window boxes full of flowers, a striped door. Your first names are painted on its sign in fat brush capitals, and the date and the place are set in its window like the day’s menu; add a photograph and it hangs in the window, the flowers in front of it. The reply card is a cone with two scoops, the place card a scoop ticket, the table number the shop’s street number on an enamel plate, and every sign wears the shop’s awning with your names on its board. Strawberry as painted, pistachio with pink trims, butter yellow, or chocolate with cream.
