Riviera is a seaside grand hotel of our own, painted in gouache: mint walls, white shutters, striped awnings over the ground floor, lemon trees in urns at the door and pennants flying over the roof. Your names are lettered across the sign under its roofline, and its three balconies carry the day: the ceremony, then dinner, then dancing, one to a floor, or on the save the date the date itself on the middle balcony. Add a photograph and it becomes a picture postcard propped against the front door. The reply card rings the brass front desk bell, the place cards are room key tags, the table numbers say “Room 12”, the menu is room service with a lemon between the courses, and every sign wears the roofline with your names on it. Mint as painted, or the same hotel in lemon, pink or sky blue.
