Vanity is a vanity mirror of our own, painted in gouache: a pink frame carved with bows and roses round a silvery glass, a gold lipstick, a strand of pearls, a cut-glass perfume bottle and a powder puff on its shelf. Your names are written across the glass in red lipstick, a little crooked the way you write on a mirror, a kiss in the corner and “xx” beside it; the details are set small under them. Add a photograph and it fills the glass, your names written under the mirror. The reply card is sealed with a kiss, the place cards are little hand mirrors with each guest’s name in lipstick, the table numbers are written on the mirror, the menu is headed by a perfume bottle with pearls between the courses, and every sign wears the mirror’s crown of bows and roses. Pink as painted, or the same mirror in mint, butter or black lacquer.
